Some tips while you are writing papers.
- NEVER PUBLISH WITH MY NAME ON IT WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE, EVEN AFTER YOU GRADUATE.
- At least two papers are expected from PhD and one from MS.
- In our group, we will think of publishing good work in journals where others in the area publish.
- Use Latex along with bibtex to publish. Most Journals have a template with which you can start your writing.
- Please keep all versions of the paper we edit. It may so happen, some work from a previous draft is needed for future drafts.
- Check grammar and spelling very very carefully. Otherwise, it is likely to be sent back for language issues. This happens even when we think a paper is good enough for publication.
- Your zeroth draft is likely to decide the quality of your paper and shows your interest in the work. Several drafts are needed for a very good zeroth draft.
- Figures have to be excellent and may need repeated changes to be of good quality and convey meaning precisely. Please do not be lazy to create good figures or correct some of them when I ask you to.
- Journal publication is tricky and depends on several factors besides the quality of the work. You need to be aware of the literature, prospective reviewers and keep other prospective journals ready while you are planning to publish.
- Stick to word/page limit. Another paper, which exceeded page limit and got published does not give you the liberty to try.
- Caption for all figures and tables are required and your text must refer to those.
- Cite all important references and give them due credit.
- Never cut and paste anything to a journal paper. Even if it is from your other paper or thesis or synopsis.
- REMEMBER, YOU DO RESEARCH AS YOU WRITE YOUR PAPER. YOUR PAPER MUST BE THE DRIVING FORCE FOR VARIOUS STEPS YOU TAKE IN YOUR RESEARCH. AS YOU WORK ON YOUR PAPER TRY TO THINK,
- How will the steps you are taking now in the research help you say something in the paper? If it is not useful, then usually it is not worth pursuing that. However, talk to me before you decide this.
- What graphs from the step I take now can I add in the paper and how will it strengthen an argument I am making?
