The Common Coot is of the same size as that of a village hen or a 3/4 grown duckling. It is a slaty black, dumpy, practically tailless waterbird, very duck-like when swimming in the distance. An ivory white pointed (not flat) bill and frontal shield (on forehead) are characteristics of this bird. It is found on rush-bordered irrigation tanks, etc. It feeds on grass and paddy shoots, aquatic weeds and insects, molluscs, etc. Its call consists of a clear and loud trumpet-like cry, often heard at night. Its nesting season is principally from July to August.
