It is a red bodied swallowtail with six sub-species. But only aristolochiae and diphilus forms are common. Both forms fly together, but aristolochiae is a common form during rainy season. The male emits a strong and slightly pungent odour. It is distributed throughout India except in dense and wet forest. It seldom ascends about 1300 mts in the hills. It is migratory and roosts in large numbers together with Crimson Rose. Its flight is slow and deliberate and it is fond of flowers of Fabaceae. One of the male forms of Palilio polytes is an excellent mimic of this butterfly. It feeds on Aristolochia tagala, a.griffithi and Indian Birthwort.
