Hard to believe, isn't it? But they have survived in IIT campus. Known as Nauree in Tamil and Nakka in Telugu, they are one of the natural predators in the food chain in the IIT campus ecosystem which does not have any other major predators. Its closest relative is the wolf but the jackal is smaller in size and meaner in appearance. They feed upon smaller animals like rats and hares. They also eat fawns of spotted deer and blackbuck and thus check their population. They are known to eat fruits like 'Bher' (Ziziphus jujube) to survive in winter months. People have heard the trademark howling of the jackal at early dawn or dusk. Usually found in deep forested areas this animal stays away from civilization. The jackals found in IIT campus and GNP are smaller in size compared to their North Indian counterparts. They are scared of domestic dogs and withdraw to the jungle when challenged by dogs. For a healthy habitat their presence is essential. Height is about 15 inches, length of the body is about 2 ft and weighs 8-10 kg.
