RECYCLE, RE-USE IITM COMMUNITY

NATURE WALKS

IITM campus is a haven for people who enjoy being with nature. It is blessed with more than 300 different species of plants (both native and exotic), about 100 different species of birds, a variety of animals, butterflies and other insects. Nature walks have been held in the campus regularly for the past few years. Currently, they are organised twice a month. During these walks, guidance will be given to identify different flora and fauna. Nature walks are also arranged in the Guindy National Park and the Theosophical Society campus, Adyar. Bird watching trips are organized to Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary (December to February), Velachery marshes, Adyar Estuary etc. Other nearby places like Nanmangalam Reserved Forest, Karikili, Nelappattu etc. are also good places for bird watching.

Upcoming Nature Walks:
(open to all)
  • Date: 6 October, 2012 Saturday 6.45AM
  • Date: Focus: Insects, Expert: Preston Ahimas (Madras Naturalists Society, Ex-Director, WWF, Tamilnadu)
  • Please assemble at the entrance to the Stadium on Delhi Avenue

General guidelines:

  • Do not disturb any form of wildlife that you see on the way
  • Keep silence during the walks and listen to nature (and to the guide!)
  • Wear clothes which are not flashy in colour as these will frighten the animals
  • Wear canvas shoes or shoes which properly cover your feet
  • Bring your notepad and binoculars (if you have one)
