It is a perky smoke brown bird with partially crested black head. It has scale like markings on breast and back. The sexes are like. These are common in gardens and light scrub jungles both near and away from human habitat. It does not have a song as such but its joyous notes and vivacious dispositions make it a welcome visitor to every garden. It feeds on insects, fruits and berries. The nesting occurs from February to May. The nest is a cup of fruitlets, sometimes plaster outside with cobwebs in a bush or a tree.
