It is slightly smaller than a pond heron. Its body is yellowish fawn in colour contrasting with black wings in flight. It is generally yellow, brown, rufous and chestnut in colour. It affects reed beds, inland swamps, coastal mangroves, estuaries etc. It feeds on fish, frogs, molluscs, etc. Its nesting season is from June to September.
