Process Developed
OIL JET PEENING (Patent No. 779/CH/2006)
Many machine components experience fatigue loading in service and mostly fail due to fatigue related mechanisms. A new peening process for introducing compressive residual stresses with less erosion and good surface finish using a high pressure oil jet was developed. Studies conducted on Aluminum alloy and steel revealed the induction of compressive residual stresses with smoother surface finish.
SURFACE MODIFICATION OF POLYMERS
Polymeric materials always suffer from the poor wear resistance and a novel approach of coating ceramic materials on polymeric materials is developed. Various ceramic materials were coated on polymeric surfaces and their tribo characteristics were investigated.
CONTROLLED BALL IMPACT PROCESS (CBI)
The new surface modification approach namely, Controlled Ball Impact (CBI) process is designed and developed to form nanocrystalline surfaces. This process is designed based on severe surface plastic deformation concept. In the developed process, a high carbon high chromium steel ball acquires the kinetic energy from the drive source and makes controlled impacts on the target surface to be treated. Preliminary studies conducted on AISI 304 stainless steel revealed the formation of nano grains on the surface based on the characterization of the treated samples. Fine-grained smooth nano surface layer can be obtained by an appropriate selection of strain rate in the developed system.
