Professor S Vengadesan
Dr. S Vengadesan currently serves as a Professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, IIT Madras and heads the Computational Fluid Dynamics Lab. He has so far supervised 11 PhD and 32 MS scholars. He has carried out 17 sponsored and industrial consultancy projects. He has published 94 peer reviewed publications. He received his PhD from Kobe University, Japan. His research interests include multiphase flow, heat transfer augmentation, turbulence modeling, LES/DES, and unsteady aerodynamics.
The CFD laboratory focus is on the study of multiphase flows (mostly two-phase), electrohydrodynamics and heat transfer studies. These studies possess substantial applications across various sectors like data center, oil & gas, chemical and biological industries etc. In applications like electronic chip cooling, oil extraction, high efficiency chemical reactors, the comprehension of multiphase flows enables engineers to optimize the design and operating conditions.
Most of the fluids in our real life, biological solutions like blood, chemicals like polymer solutions, fruit extracts in food industries are non-Newtonian in nature. By understanding flow dynamics of real life non-Newtonian fluids, performance and efficiency can be enhanced. Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) finds application in diverse industries. The combination of EHD with multiphase flows offers an innovative and secure approach in process industries to preserve desired flow characteristics without the use of hazardous surfactants. EHD can enhance heat transfer in thermal systems, improve efficiency and performance. This technology has potential applications in various fields, including compact heat exchangers, efficient electronic cooling, and thermal management in challenging environments.
We also investigate aerodynamics and fluid structure interaction associated with insect dynamics and various bluff body configurations subject to different environment conditions. Application of turbulence models to complex fluid problems is also one of our interests. Our group investigations on bio-memetic surface modification showed increased load bearing capacity, and heat transfer augmentation.
