The adult has a bluish black upperside
. Its forewing has interrupted and irregular discal and apical white bands. The hindwing has discal band which is nearly round, and marginal rows of bright crimson crescent spots. The bands and spots are larger in the hindwing. Its wingspan is 90 to 120 mm. This is an extremely common red-bodied swordtail butterfly in South India. Avian predators are repelled by the characteristic red body and rows of bright crimson marking on the hindwing.
