It is an egret like marsh bird chiefly earthy brown when at rest. It has glistening white wings. It acquired maroon hair-like plumes and long white occipital crest during the breeding season. Both the sexes are alike and are found where ever there is presence of water bodies. It is also found on the sea coast, mangroves and swamps. It eats frogs, fish, crabs and insects. Its nesting season is from May to September (Southwest Monsoon) and November to January in south India. Its nest is an untidy twig platform and eggs are pale greenish blue.
