It is a dapper, blue and green little Kingfisher .Its underparts are deep rusty coloured. It ha short stumpy tail and long, straight, pointed bill. Both the sexes alike. It can be seen singly by stream, tank or puddle, perched on a overhanging branch or flying swiftly over the water. Its food habits include small fish, tadpoles and aquatic insects' .Its nesting season is from March to June. Its nest is a horizontal tunnel dug into the earth bank of a stream or ditch. Eggs are pure white with glossy, roundish oval in shape.
