Its upper plumage is golden yellow and black in color. Its lower Buffy is white streaked with black more boldly on breast. Its crown and occipital crest is crimson in color. The female is similar but with fore crown black stippled with white and only occipital crest is crimson. It can be seen singly or in pairs, on tree trunks in open wooded country, orchards etc. Its food habits include beetles, insects, ants, and pulp of ripe fruit as well as flower nectar. Its nesting season is from March to August. Its nest is an unlined hollow in a tree stem or branch, excavated by the birds. Its eggs are glossy china white in color. It is found particularly in the entire Indian Union, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan
