It is a speckeled and barred black and white kingfisher with the typical, stout, dagger-shaped bill. The female is similar to male but with a single black gorget broken in the middle, as against two more or less complete ones in the male. It frequents rivers, jheels, irrigation tanks and tidal creeks. Its food consists of fish, tadpoles, frogs and aquatic insects. Its nesting season is between October and May. Both sexes share excavation, incubation and feeding the young
