It is a small and slim dove with earthy brown colour. Its above portion is greyish in colour, the below portion is pinkish brown and white with a miniature `chessboard` in rufous. It has back colour on either sides of neck. Both the sexes are alike and it can be seen in pairs or loose flocks in dry scrub or semi desert country. It feeds on seeds and grain gleaned on the ground. Its nesting season is particularly throughout the year. Its nest is usually made up of ridiculously flimsy twig platform in a Euphorbia clump, frequently also on rafters, etc in inhabited dwellings. Its eggs are white in colour and elliptical in shape.
