It is a glistening black duck-like water bird with a long stiff tail, and slender, compressed bill sharply hooked at the tip. It also has a small white patch on the throat, and suggestion of a crest at back of its head. Both sexes are alike. It is found singly or gregariously at tanks, jheels, etc. It is found on all inland waters, and also brackish lagoons and tidal creeks. It lives exclusively on fish which it chases and captures under water. Flocks occasionally hunt in concert like pelicans. Its nesting is chiefly from November to February.
