It is a lanky snow white marsh bird and has a black bill and partly coloured black and yellow feet. It has a long drooping crest of two narrow plumes acquired in the breeding season. It has dainty filamentous ornamental feathers in both back and the breast. Both the sexes are alike. It is found in flocks on marshlands. It flies with steady wing beats with its neck pulled in like a heron. Its food habits include fish, frogs, insects and small reptiles. Its nesting season is from July/August in north India and November to February in south India. Its nest is a shallow twig platform and lined with straw and leaves. Eggs are pale bluish green.
